Korea’s original shrimp snack, and after 50-odd years it still earns the tagline everyone knows: your hand keeps going back. Salty, savory, genuinely hard to stop — and the big zip bag means you don’t have to.
Nongshim Saewookkang shrimp chips costs ₩5,480 at Morning Mart, Seoul, as of July 2026. ()
What you get

Saewookkang (‘shrimp chips’) is about as national as a Korean snack gets — it launched back in 1971. The old ad jingle, roughly ‘your hand keeps reaching for it,’ basically became how people describe eating the thing: you can’t stop. It’s the default cheap drinking snack; set it next to soju or beer and it just works, so much so that a bare-bones drinking spread in a Korean movie is almost always soju plus a bag of these. In 2020 it even rode a viral meme (singer Rain’s ‘Gang’) to a sales jump.
This is the 400g zip-bag size, so you tear it open and reseal it — though the zip goes loose fast. I grabbed it at Morning Mart in Yangji Market.

FAQ
What does Saewookkang taste like?
Light, crunchy and savory-salty with a real shrimp flavor — closer to a puffed shrimp cracker than a potato chip. It’s mild enough to eat by the handful, which is exactly why people say they can’t stop.
Why is it eaten with beer and soju?
The salty shrimp flavor pairs cleanly with alcohol and it’s cheap, so it’s Korea’s default drinking snack. A soju bottle plus a bag of Saewookkang is a classic no-frills spread.
What’s the zip bag for?
This 400g size has a resealable zip so you can eat some and close it back up. The zip does loosen after a few opens, so a clip helps.
